Legalization of gay marriage continues to grow

The state of Hawaii officially became the 16 state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage on November 13 following Illinois who started issuing gay marriage licenses November 5.  Members of the Gay/Straight Alliance club at SHS were happy to hear the great news. “I hope all of the states will eventually pass gay marriage,” said Senior Laura Nelson, the president of GSA. A piece of history in Snohomish is now changing as the local Kusler’s  compounding pharmacy sold its retail prescription business to Rite Aid as of November 1, 2013. READ STORY »

National Honor Society Induction

An induction ceremony for the new members of National Honor Society was held at SHS on November 14 in the commons. At the ceremony there was a special guest, King 5 news anchor, Mark Wright who spoke. Then, each of the 4 officers lit a candle symbolizing scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Lastly, all members would recite a pledge to confirm their place in National Honor Society. This year 77 new members were inducted, making a total of approximately 157 members.

The Great American Smokeout Day

The Great American Smokeout is an annual social engineering on the third Thursday of November by the American Cancer Society. This event encourages Americans to quit the habit of smoking by challenging smokers to not do it for 24 hours, hoping the decision to not smoke will last forever. READ STORY »

Mr. SHS is crowned

Snohomish High School held “Mr. SHS” at the schools performing arts center. Mr. SHS is a competition held for male students nominated by their peers. READ STORY »

Student athletes sign NLI

Five Snohomish High School student athletes attended National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Thursday, November 15. There are a total of eight student athletes who are committed, but three of them are signing at a later date: girls volleyball player Lanesha Reagan, and boys lacrosse players Jarrett Toy and Davyd Powell. Husky or Cougar territory

Students came to school dressed in Cougar crimson and grey or Husky gold and purple Wednesday, November 27. This was the second “dress up day” of the year giving students yet another way to show their spirit and support their favorite team in the upcoming Apple Cup.

While most kids wore just one team’s colors, Junior Raichel Howell decided to dress up in both Cougar and Husky gear. “My family has gone to both WSU and the UW so I had to wear both to sort of ‘appease the family,'" said Howell. READ STORY »

Nelson Mandela dies at age 95

Some would call him one of the most influential men of our time. Nelson Mandela led South Africa in the battle against apartheid and emerged from 27 years in prison to become South Africa’s first elected black president and a global symbol of reconciliation.

He died at the age of 95 on December 5 at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg as a result of a terminal respiratory illness. READ STORY »
