Veterans Day Assembly

All 1800 students of SHS gathered at the Veterans Day assembly Thursday and, contrary to what you would expect, you could have heard a pin drop. The students and staff gathered to remember all the hard work that people have dedicated to our country.

The band played “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, by Patrick Gilmore, and the crimson singers sang with choir director Jackie Cummings.

Veteran and JROTC teacher Captain Lennon gave a speech about what freedom was to him and how important serving in this country means to him.

Eighty-one names on the plaque outside SHS were remembered for their service to our country by a combination of 81 students and staff bringing chairs into the middle of the gym to spell SHS, a bell was rung for every person that has passed. One of the students involved, Senior Mike Sanders, was really happy he got the chance to do it. “I felt honored that I was chosen to represent a former high school student that fought for our country.”

"I was in tears by the end. The playing of Taps gets me every time… and having my husband a veteran makes me so much more proud,” History and English teacher Amanda Cote said.
