Changes in SHS Lunches

Although the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act has been in place since 2012, many high school students, including students from SHS, are noticing a difference in their schools’ lunches this year.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act is intended to improve the health of the nation’s children, create an environment that reinforces the development of healthy eating habits, and increase the consumption of health foods during the school day.

“[I would] rate the food eh on a level of great to poor. The food is better than middle school though,” said freshman Lily Cox.

The school lunch at Snohomish has improved in quality and in nutrition. Many food choices on the menu have been replaced with healthier versions. For example, both pasta noodles and bread have been replaced with healthier whole grain versions. There has been a noticeable improvement in SHS’s food over the years, and many of the seniors at SHS have been noticing the significant improvements.

“[The food this year has] improved hecka man," said senior Lily Stephens. "Its really good now. I used to think I would contract a disease. The mashed potatoes are good and they serve real chicken now. I think Michelle Obama wants everyone to have nice arms like her, so she makes them eat healthy.”

Throughout the student body, there has been talk of the changes being made in the lunch room.

“[I've] noticed an increase in sales since previous years,” said Pat Flickner, a lunch lady at SHS. She also says that the beginning of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids act was a rough start. “The kids weren’t ready for that.”

This past year, sales have increased and the quality of the food has improved.

Since the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act kids have had to take a vegetable and fruit during lunch, however, it seems as if the food is going to waste.“[I've seen] more food being thrown on the floor. Parts of apples and carrots, things the kids don’t want to eat,” said Gayle Folmar, one of the three custodians at SHS.

This past year at SHS, there has also been a change in food suppliers. The Compass Group, the new supplier, prides themselves on fresh food and providing the healthiest of food to the people who eat it. Although people may disagree on the taste of the food, there have absolutely been many dietary reforms made here at SHS.
