Homecoming Week 101

Homecoming is packed full of tradition at SHS, complete with a week full of fun dress up days, a parade full of students through the town, a football game, and of course, the Homecoming dance.

For the new students, freshman, or bored upper classmen, I present to you SHS Homecoming 101- a complete description of Homecoming week so you know exactly what to expect.

Fancy Day: The first day of spirit week. This is a day where some people begin to test the waters and see exactly how far other students are going in this “dress up” day. Let me tell you- SHS can class it up. Nearly every girl is in a dress, skirt, or slacks. Nearly every guy has slacks, and a nice button up shirt. This is the day where we have the Homecoming Queen Announcement ceremony. So dress like your beautiful selves, and represent by wearing fancy clothes on Monday.

Tacky Day/Tie Dye Day: After the finesse and class of Monday, this is an extremely fun day. This is one of those days of the year where people actually wear their crazy assembles that are in the back of their closet in public. Leopard print, clashing colors, tie dye pants, tie dye hats, things with polka dots, and things with feathers- you name it. People actually come to school dressed in the tackiest, or most tie dyeist clothes they can find. And it’s totally socially acceptable.

Pajama Day: Welcome to one of the most beloved days of the school year…and the most comfortable. Be prepared for students who wear onesies, blanket, sweat pants, robes, slippers, and a whole assortment of other sleeping clothes. As long as you keep it within school dress code, sky is the limit for you to be as comfortable as you want to be. Most people just wear pajama pants and a cozy shirt, but there are definitely a huge group of students who go all out.

Class Color War Day: And suddenly, things become serious. This is an annual competition between classes that challenges each individual to take part in a greater achievement. Freshman dawn their grey uniforms, sophomores wear their glorious white outfits, juniors put on their armor of red, and seniors…well seniors simply wear the black of night. Don’t let your class down. Deck out in your class color, because there will be a winner that is announced at the end of the day.

Crazy Red and White Day: If you don’t dress up for any of the other days, dress up for this one. People go completely, 100% all out on this day. You want to fit in? Stand out. It is very unusual for a student not to be wearing at least some article of spirit wear. The majority of students will be wearing tutus, beads, club shirts, funky socks, crazy hats, paw print face paint, ripped shirts, etc. Again, as long as it is within school regulations (i.e. no face coverings, no exposed midriff, shorts/skirts need to be below fingertips), crazy clothing is absolutely encouraged.

The Game: This game is definitely one of the most fun football games of the year. Students and staff who are already dressed in crazy red and white for serpentine are all ready to go represent Panther Pride at the game. This year, SHS is playing Kamiak. Stay classy, cheer loud, deck out in spirit wear, and have an amazing night.

The Dance: The Homecoming Dance can get a little intimidating. Either you do not have a date, and you are constantly being surrounded with people being asked, or you have a date, and you are trying to find a group, a dress, or plans. The biggest thing that you need to remember is to relax. Homecoming is crazy, loud, and a big deal, but mainly it’s just about having fun. There are a huge number of students who would rather go with their friends. That is totally socially acceptable; you absolutely do not have to have a date. And if you do have a date, remember that this is a really fun night. Do not stress out too much about making it the most magical night ever.

So stay strong, prepare your amazing outfits, and have fun. This is an awesome week of assemblies, crazy clothes, and of course spirit. Make it amazing.
