Snohomish High School's Technical Underground

Snohomish High School has allowed a great number of clubs to take shape over the past few months. Some appeal to athletes, others to students who want to give back to society. There are clubs for everything at SHS, and now we can add robotics to the long list of extra-curricular activities that the school welcomes with open arms.

Club admissions to SHS are carried out through the ASB senate. The Robotics club was presented, voted upon and approved by the senate in October, and has been active before it was even officially a club.

The Robotics club is run by Matt Johnson and David Ellefson, two teachers at Snohomish High School.

The Robotics club currently has about thirty members and is looking to expand.

This fantastic environment of machines and technology is no piece of cake. The students and their advisors deal with very complex machinery and technology that may not necessarily be understood by many, and mechanisms that the students understand well.

This is all to build robots in order to compete in competitions in and around Snohomish. Robotics is now a nationwide phenomenon, with many students from middle school to grad school wanting to design and create a mechanical masterpiece.

The Robotics club at SHS is a member of Washington FIRST Robotics, which is a statewide competition for students interested in technology in and around the state of Washington. If the Robotics club were to succeed in winning this competition, they would advance to the national FIRST competition.
