Pure Wrestling Talent

Wyatt Butler, a junior at SHS, has had an exceptional high school athletic career that has amazed many people. Butler was one of the lucky young men to travel with the wrestling team to the Tacoma Dome for the State wrestling tournament during his freshman and sophomore years- an incredible accomplishment. The excitement of placing in state as a freshman slipped through Butlers fingers by one match. Sadly, the same situation happened sophomore year, once again making him one match away from placing in state.

Butler has been wrestling since he was four, which brings him to twelve years of wrestling eleven months out of the year. With all the hard practices, constant trying, and wrestling four days out of the week, the hardest part of wrestling for Butler would be having to cut weight for matches, duals and tournaments to meet the required poundage.

Going to state as a freshman and sophomore has shown Butler that he can overcome challenges, and it also showed him that he can do anything if he puts his mind to it. This has helped him in life by teaching him to not back down from a challenge, or in wrestling in general.

“My goal for the coming post season is the state championships, because I made it to state the last two years as a freshman and sophomore, and I want to make a difference this year. And I think I have a good shot at this championship,” said Butler.

“Wyatt does a really good cradle when wrestling. In participating in wrestling, it has taught him how to work hard, and it has helped him form new relationships,” said Ruby Butler, Butler's little sister.

Butler’s biggest supporter is his father. “My dad has always been there for me, and he has always been supportive. He drives me everywhere. He drove me to North Dakota for nationals. He is always been there for me and has always been my biggest supportive.”

Besides Butler’s father, the coaches he most looks up to are Coaches Cliff Johnson and Kevin Judkins.

“Coach Judkins has been so inspirational this last year. He really connects with me and understands. Also, Cliff Johnson has really affected me. He was my free style coach for four years, and he really had a big impact and got me into it.”

Butler continues to advance in his spectacular wrestling talents and wow all of his spectators, coaches, friends, and family.
