Two students complete over 500 hours of community service

The Dynamic Duo Christina Deierling and Jessamine Anderson (both juniors), have accumulated enormous amounts of Community Service within the past few years. They both started doing community service at a young age, and were involved in a lot of church community service events. Deierling has been involved for her whole life, and her dad works as a director at a food bank. Anderson has also been doing community service her whole life, also involved through Church.

Christina and Jessamine have taken part in several forms of community service. This past year, they took part in a WASC Conference, which is Washington Association of Student Council. Christina and Jessamine, spent many hours planning that conference. In June, they attended NASC, which is the National Association of Student Council in Florida. “We did fundraising for it, and then attended seminars, and meetings there,” said Deierling. They also met with other schools to learn about what they do for community service. All of the hours put into these conferences counted as community service.

They love being involved in community service, because it feels very rewarding. “My favorite community service that I have done, was probably organizing the WASC 2013 Leadership Conference,” said Deierling. The WASC Conference was a conference where all of Washington’s Student Council leaders get together. Deierling and Anderson also went on a mission trip to Guatemala to install stoves in homes. This was very rewarding for them and “that was really fun because we got to connect with the kids, and everyone was crying when we left, because it was so sad,” said Deierling. They went to areas with high poverty areas. “We installed 98 stoves,” said Anderson. The area they were in was very desolate, and run down.  They were glad they installed new stoves with pipes that led outside, because “usually they would have an open fire in their house, so they didn’t have an air vent, so the smoke would just rise to the ceiling and stay there creating build up that makes them sick.” They also gathered up glasses, toothbrushes, toys, jump ropes, and Frisbees.

Deierling has done 316 hours of community service, within one year starting April 1, 2013 until March 31, 2014. She currently has about 100 hours, for this year alone. Anderson has done 260 hours of community service within that same timeframe, and currently has 116 hours so far this year. They do most of their community service together and have both received Varsity letters in community service, which requires 175 hours.
