More Stop Signs Necessary

SHS is for the most part a very safe place, however, there is one thing that stands out to me and also some of my fellow students. The safety of walking to school and walking home is very important to students who live near the school. There are not many stop signs around the school. There are street lights, but that doesn’t help much by the little streets and crosswalks. Two SHS students have been hit by cars this year.
A sophomore girl, from SHS, was hit on her way to school early one morning. Freshman Kaitlin Anderson was on her bus when they witnessed the scene. “She was on her way to school and only looked once when stepping in front of the on-going car. The car should have stopped but it didn’t. If I could have done something I would have, but our bus just kept going!” said Anderson.
The first reason for having more stop signs around the school is that cars would be forced to stop before people cross the road. Cars are already supposed to slow down on the streets next to SHS when near a crosswalk, but some people don’t bother. What those people don’t know is that it could be very harmful to others trying to cross the street. Yes, people who cross the street are supposed to look both ways, but do they all?
Some kids walk to school. Their parents and the children themselves want to feel safe at school; going to school and coming home from school. The more people zooming around in their cars and not paying attention, the more people getting hurt. Walking in the town of Snohomish, or any town for that matter, should be a safe thing to do.
The places that might need stop signs are where it’s hard for cars to see the pedestrians crossing the street. There are a lot of places people have to make sure are clear before driving in an intersection. People don’t always look where they are driving until someone walks into the crosswalk and gets hit by them. There has been added some barriers that have been to the side walks near the school which also helps with safety issues.
If people put more stop signs around the school it would be a much safer environment.
