Huskies Win The Apple Cup

Everyone is aware of the rivalry between the Pac 12 University of Washington Huskies and the Washington State Cougars. The 285 miles between the "Dawgs" and cats isn’t enough when it comes to the Apple Cup; a traditional football game between two universities in the same state.

Washington isn’t the only state to have rivalry football games. The Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans get together to play for their school each year as well.

The first game between the two ended in a 5 to 5 tie. Even though the Huskies have won almost twice as much as the Cougars, these teams are very close to each other, causing games to go into overtime, sometimes triple overtime to get a win.

Overtime was introduced into the college and high school levels in 1996 and has been used in the Apple Cup four times so far. In the year 1996, the game in Pullman ended in overtime while in 2008 the game went into a double overtime. Shockingly, the Huskies and Cougars also went into triple overtime in the year of 2002 in Pullman.

This year’s game ended in a triumphant win with the University of Washington ending with a score of 31 and Washington State with a sad number of 13. Knowing the Huskies would beat the Cougars I honestly didn’t expect them to almost double their score.

Beginning with the running back, Washington got a 60 yard touchdown bringing the game to 21 to 0 with the Huskies in the lead. Sorry Cougs, by the beginning of the second half it was already time for you to go home.

With the game starting around 12 p.m. Black Friday in Seattle, people were unhappy because either the plan was to be hitting the mall for the crazy deals or simply because they had to be in the office on the clock. Mark Sandritter, the managing editor for The Coug Center at Washington State University, said that “games on Black Friday won’t become a tradition because each team is only allowed to have a minimum amount of non-Saturday game days. Some of those included a game Halloween night even.”

Devyn Reed, grade 11, said that she is “embarrassed to be a Cougar.” Even though she watched the game, she is sad to call herself a fan of Washington Sate “because [they] lost.”
