Washington State Senator visits SHS

Washington State Senator, Maria Cantwell, paid a visit to Tuck Gionet’s government class Monday, November 25.

Gionet decided that having Cantwell would be a great experience for his government classes to expand their knowledge of politics. “Since I teach government, it just seemed natural, plus she is Garret Clay’s aunt. How could you turn down one of your nephews, really the pressure was on Garret," said Gionet.

Cantwell helped students understand that the politicians they see in the media are actually “every day people” just like themselves. “They got great insight, with a first account, of a person in Washington D.C. Senate,” said Gionet happily.

Cantwell spoke about her role in the senate and how the student’s generation was very lucky to be so connected with the government through social media. Most have not had the convenience of social media while growing up and it has helped the most recent generation become more in tuned to the politics of Washington D.C.

In the future Gionet hopes to have Cantwell speak again to his government class. The students gained a very valuable and realistic sense of what goes on in the political world from Cantwell's visit that was a once in a lifetime experience.
