High Demand For Women's Basketball Fans

If you’ve been to both a girls and boys basketball game then you know the boys are more likely to get fans than the girls. Most people’s initial thought about basketball is that males dominate the sport and that’s why they get more fans than female basketball teams do. However, there should be an equal amount of fans at both genders’ games because after all, it is the same exact sport.

It is true that men’s basketball is faster pace with higher game scores and often times you’ll even see one of their players dunk, but women’s basketball teams have proper fundamentals. The girls pay more attention to the details. An example of this is their relentless defense, resulting in a lower ending score because they make it tougher for their opponent to score. Female players know that the little things win championships and this is why they make it a priority to box out, create hustle plays, execute plays, and many other important things.

Of even greater importance, girl basketball players are more likely to score because of a set play rather than off the dribble. This tends to lead towards less selfish basketball teams and makes for better chemistry because they collaborate on the court so well. Senior Brooke Ballinger, a die-hard Seattle Storm fan, enjoys watching women’s basketball more than men’s basketball. “They actually know what teamwork is,” said Ballinger. Many would agree that sports are more fun to watch when all players are involved.

Finally, here at SHS the ladies basketball team has proved themselves over the boys basketball team. Last year, the girls finished their season with a substantial amount of more wins than the boys had. So that begs the question, “Why not watch a team who is more likely to win their games?” The girls basketball team should receive more support from SHS due to their prior success. Last season, the girls had a few super fans that went to almost every game but other than that, “[The fans] were mostly just parents, relatives, or adults who thoroughly enjoy the game,” said Senior basketball player, Bailey Armbruster.

The girls basketball team should start receiving more fans because of their strong fundamentals, great teamwork, and previous record. Rather than listen to the stigma that girls basketball has, keep in mind that basketball is the same sport regardless of gender, and let their plays do the talking. These young women have high hopes and expectations for the season that just began as well. In order to help them on their journey to acquire more fans, go support the girls at an upcoming game. They shouldn’t disappoint!
