Girls basketball team defeats Mount Vernon

Although it was Friday the 13, the SHS girls’ basketball team won their first league game against Mount Vernon 49-41. The panthers held the lead at halftime and were able to build off of that throughout the rest of the game to finish with a win.

The girl’s best quarter was the third, scoring a total of 18 points. Although the panthers were in the lead the entire game, Mount Vernon outscored the panthers in the fourth quarter. Towards the end of the game Senior Callie Harwood hit a three pointer to extend the lead.

Harwood led the panthers with 17 points, while Sophomore Madeline Smith scored ten, and Sophomore Shaylee Harwood scored eight. Leading scorer Harwood said “[she] was really proud of her team and will build off this momentum during the games this week." Winning their first league game of the season, Senior Hannah Berntson said “it felt really good because it gives us an uplifting start to the season.” The hardest quarter for the panthers was the fourth. “There was one point where we were worried but we had some free throws that finished it off,” said Berntson.

The SHS girl’s next home game is this Friday where they will take on Monroe at 7:15. Come out to support your school!
