Macho Volleyball 2013

Several all-male teams gathered together for SHS’s annual Macho Volleyball Saturday, November 24. The long awaited event was composed of Glacier Peak and SHS students playing for the title of Macho Volleyball champions.

From tie-dyed shirts, swim shorts and headbands to tight spandex the boys uniforms were quite eccentric showing a very humorous side to volleyball. Team Yoke Squad 2.0 sported their phone numbers on the back of blue T-shirts hoping to get the ladies digits in return. “It turns out we didn’t get any numbers,” said Yoke Squad 2.0 member Christian Barney.

The competitors were high energy and played with skill throughout each match. At one point a player hit the ball so hard that it managed to knock a ceiling vent out of place. “The boys playing are very pumped up and very energetic, they are literally bouncing off the walls. There is definitely good team work and a strong sense of comradry,” says intent viewer Bo Salvadelina.

The main purpose of Macho Volleyball is to give boys a chance to play instead of girls. “They don’t play as cleanly as girls and they don’t really follow the rules," says student referee Hannah Ratzke.

Joining the competition a GPHS vs. SHS staff game was played at half time showing our teachers athletic ability. Before the match the staff partook in a practice game where sadly English teacher Jennifer English, was injured and unable to play. But even with the loss of a very valuable player SHS skillfully managed to win all three matches.

In the end, despite SHS’s wonderful staff competition the champion team of Macho Volleyball was the Average Joes from GPHS; a big loss for SHS but next year the panthers plan to win back the title.
