High School and Beyond Day

High School and Beyond Day was hosted at SHS last Thursday. Students were dismissed from their extended second period classes at various times to attend the event for 40 minutes.

The event was different for every class. Freshmen went to the PAC, where they learned about various upcoming activities on campus and opportunities to become more involved. Sophomores and juniors headed to the gym, where numerous colleges had booths set up. Seniors got to attend two of five “mini-sessions”, where they could be informed on topics such as how to write a resume or how to apply for scholarships.

In the gym, 55 different colleges and organizations ranging from the Army to the Northwest Hair Academy were present, prepared to answer any questions students might have about enrollment or the programs they offer.

Steve VerHoeven, one of the staff members responsible for organizing the event, agreed that High School and Beyond Day is very important. “[I] think it’s important that [students] start making some plans for [their] future even as a sophomore,” he said. “[It also] gives students a chance to see what’s out there outside of four-year colleges; we’ve got a lot of technical schools, two-year colleges, [and] the military that [were there].”
