Chess team excels in WESCO

The SHS chess team played amazing games Thursday night while participating in the annual WESCO Chess Jamboree. Four different schools took part in the competition but Snohomish, last year’s WESCO chess champions, came out on top.

After all the kings were checkmated and all the rounds were finished, Snohomish claimed the highest average individual score of all WESCO varsity teams that competed. Among the top ranking SHS competitors were Junior Jack Pritchard, third place, and Junior Tucker Williams, who made the top ten and tied the record of the fourth place winner.

Snohomish Chess coach, Paul Magnus watched attentively as his young team displayed a great amount of talent and poise. In addition to the varsity chess team, “we have some great talent on our team this year,” said Magnus while solving a chess puzzle. Such a promising team is guaranteed to earn SHS a spot on the oldest traveling trophy in the state of Washington for a third consecutive year.

This competition is only the first of many this chess season, and the team can’t wait to take the WESCO title once more.
