Skate for Change collections a success

The Leadership class ceased their collections for the Skate for Change charity last Friday.

Over 3,000 bags of supplies collected by SHS and Glacier Peak will be given to various locations for distribution among the homeless. They passed their goal.

Some of the supplies will go to Skate for Change chapters in Seattle and Spokane, while the rest will go to schools interested in starting their own Skate for Change chapters and impoverished areas of California.

While most of the school had only two days to donate, the ASB class was collecting for three weeks prior, and only opened the drive to the rest of the school to coincide with the assembly.

The idea to have Mike Smith talk for Skate for Change originally came from the Leadership classes themselves. “We saw him speak, we liked him, and thought we’d have him come,” said Jessamine Anderson, who was involved in planning the assembly.

The planners of the assembly liked Mike Smith’s message, and this was their main reason for having him. Another planner, Sydney Gemmil, said, “It really makes you kind of put your life in perspective about what is important.”

The supplies collected will be distributed in bags, each of which will include two pairs of socks, deodorant, a toothbrush, granola, and toothpaste, that will be given to homeless people.
