Running through life

The big move: At the beginning of her junior year, cross country runner Esmeralda Bonilla transferred from her old school in California to SHS. She had heard from her sister, who lives here, that the education was good and the people were nice. She wanted to try something new and cares deeply about learning, so she moved to Washington and started her junior year at SHS.

Snohomish in short: If she could change anything, she would have moved here sooner and spent all four years here at Snohomish. She wishes she could have gotten to know more of the people here. She’s proud to be a panther and said that, “Everyone is so nice!”

Cool school: She is most surprised by school spirit and the difference in learning styles between her old school and Snohomish. The hardest part about transferring was adjusting to the different teaching styles. At her old school, they took three classes a day, and switched every other day, compared to SHS’s six-class schedule. It was hard at first, but her teachers will tell you she’s an admirable student.

Crazy classes: Her favorite classes are English and chemistry, because they’re fun and she likes how much you learn in them, and she wants to continue taking them in college. She plans on going to a two year community college when she moves back to California with her family, and work on becoming a registered nurse. When she was young she wanted to be a teacher, but now she wants to be a nurse saying, “I just want to help people, and be able to give people what I’ve learned.”

Cross country: This is her third year of doing cross country. She started running in P.E., “I would be the only female running.” She wanted to get a good grade, and she was willing to do whatever it took, even if that meant being the only girl running. Her teacher noticed this, and suggested she do cross country. “At first I did not like it… I just kept practicing,” Bonilla said. Now, she’s singing a different tune, “I hope I keep doing it; I’m the only one [in my family] that likes to run.” A variety of thoughts run through her head during practice or a race, but above all she tells herself to, “Try my best, get it done with, get that person that’s in front of me.” She would describe herself as being strong; “I don’t give up easily. I always try my best at whatever I do.”

High school and beyond: She would sum up the last four years as being great, though she’s sad to be a senior and wishes she could have spent more time at SHS. Her favorite memory is Serpentine. She simply likes school and learning. In ten years she hopes to be working as a general nurse or at least still in school. After college, she hopes to start working as a nurse and later have a family.

Outside of school: Outside of school she enjoys spending time with her family and cooking. Her favorite food to cook and eat is salmon.

Seniors signing off: To the Freshmen and underclassmen she says, “Never give up, always try your best.” Esmeralda hopes that she has left a lasting impression with SHS and will inspire people to do better.
