League of Legends Club

The League of Legends club is a newly founded club at SHS, but it is already one of the largest clubs on campus. Doug Allen, Senior at SHS and Chieftain of the League of Legends club, was the one who came up with the idea for the popular club. “At the first meeting we had around 50 [students] … and we get a few new ones every day,” Allen said.

The club got started when Allen realized that he “knew so many people who play [League of Legends] from our school” and he decided to take advantage of this. Allen considers the game another kind of social activity for kids to compete in at different levels of play. The game offers a wide variety of skill levels to play at and it encourages gamers to improve their skill levels as they go through the game. When first starting the game, most people pick a role that they wish to play as and they devote their time.

Although this is a large club at our school, many students and teachers are still wondering what League of Legends is. The secretary of the League of Legends club, Kiyoshi Akazawa, described League of Legends as “our generation’s game of chess.” It is a game that requires fast reactions and quick thinking to outsmart and “outplay” your opponents.

The League of Legends club at SHS is currently staging a tournament for members of the club to compete in. The grand prize may only be 20 dollars to Taco Bell, but the competitors are hard at work. The tournament is taking course over three weeks. Each premade team has three people on it who have to work together in order to win the game. Vice Chieftain of the club, Brandon Leeman, explained that League of Legends “takes a lot of knowledge of the game and practice” in order to be good enough to win consistently.

The club meets during panther period and after school in Mr. Gibbs' room, D308. For those looking to join, you can show up at the next meeting or ask Doug Allen if you have any questions.
