ASB seeks replacements for Judicial Branch vacancy

ASB President Shelby Garrison began collecting nominees for the judicial branch officers for the junior and freshman class last week. Normally, there is only a need for freshman class judicial officers, but the student who formerly held the position decided to run for office.

ASB Adviser Vince Ivelia noted judicial officers serve for all four years of high school, and are elected during freshman year. They only lose the position if they run for a different office.

Judicial decisions have, in the past, caused a complete re-do of an election when the election was not done in accordance with the school constitution.

Another decision created the precedent for a tied election: a game of chance, such as a coin flip.

Ivelia did say that while the judicial branch positions are important, they will most likely not have an effect on the activities of the average student, and only come when needed, which is rarely. As he said, they are effectively “on standby”.

The nominations come from teachers, who are asked to suggest any students they think might fit the job. If nominated, a student may choose to either decline or pursue the position. That would involve giving a brief speech before the assembled Senate, and a period of waiting while the Senate votes on their final choice.

The holders of the final positions have not yet been decided.
