Cosplay coming to SHS

The loud crashing noises from the action-packed “Attack on Titan” can be heard throughout second floor D-building every Monday after school. Students in amazing cosplay make their way into English teacher Tim Frasier-Bumatay’s classroom where they all share a common fascination with anime. “I love the people here,” Junior Sybil Feidler, an Anime club member, said.

For most, their love for anime started at a young age. Whether they discovered it in a movie, a picture, or an older sibling inspired them, their interest in anime has followed them throughout their lives. “When I first saw anime I was astounded,” says Junior Krystal Schoonover a member of Anime club who is well known for her dedication to cosplay.

Schoonover doesn’t have to tell you about her love for anime, one look at her magnificent cosplay and you can see it. When it comes to Schoonover’s cosplay she wants her costumes to be exact.

“I try to get as accurate as possible, I put emotion and thought into it," Schoonover said. Schoonover hand sews her costumes to make them into beautiful works of art, all in preparation for Comic Con.

“It’s my favorite place in the world,” says Junior Sierra Schedin Anime club president. Comic Con is an event that brings together all different kinds of cosplayers. “You all have a common interest and they’re a really accepting group of people,” Schoonover said.

There are two main Comic Con events, Sakura-Con meaning cherry blossom and Aki-Con for October. Each event lasts three days and gives cosplayers a chance to show off their best cosplay and interact with one another.

In the spring, the Anime club plans to experience Sakura-Con together wearing their best cosplay. They are currently in the process of raising money for the event by selling Halloween candy grams at both A and B lunches and in the future plan to hold a bake sale.

Most club members hope to incorporate their love for Anime in the future by continuing to participate in Comic Con and drawing Manga. For some, Anime conventions have inspired them to pursue a career, “I want to be writer/author for videogames,” Schedin said.

“When you see cosplayers its okay to ask what they’re cosplaying as, we just like different things and being like everyone else isn’t expressing yourself,” Senior Sairah Best, an Anime club member said.
