SHS PSAT scores drop

This year Snohomish High School’s PSAT results have come as shock to the district.

“The results are way down compared to state and national levels”, SHS counselor Ken Hansen said.

This year’s juniors at SHS that have taken the PSAT have gotten back their scores which are considerably lower than the past years.

“Several factors go in to these results,” Hansen said. "Did the students prepare themselves by doing the practice test or by looking at the bulletin?"

By taking the PSAT students have the opportunity to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship is designed to recognize and honor academically talented students in nation. The goal is to help increase support for the students’ education.

“It’d be a shame if some students didn’t take the test which is also a factor that we have to look into for why we have such low scores," Hansen said.

With such low results, staff is hoping that the students decide to work harder for when they take the SAT next year.

“The best to get ready is to study then practice, then do it again and again till it becomes easier each time," Hansen advises. “Motivation is a also a major factor into this. If the students don’t stay motivated to pass the test it will affect their scores."

“Hopefully this is a wakeup call to next year’s students” Hansen said.
