The search for a new security guard has begun

Gavin Heinemann, the security guard at Snohomish High School for three years, left the school on November 30, 2012. The process of hiring a new security monitor began before he left, and will continue until someone is found to fill the spot of the popular security guard.

Heinemann, who is a 2005 graduate of SHS, was hired by the University of Washington Police Department. He will attend police academy first, but following his training he will become a police officer of the campus.

After attaining a degree in Criminal Justice, Heinemann applied to become a security guard at SHS in 2009. While keeping students out of too much trouble, he was also preparing for the eight-step exam that is required to enter the police force. After passing the rigorous written and physical tests, Heinemann was fully prepared to accept the job offer.

“I was ready to move on to better things,” Heinemann said.

Gordy Brockman, assistant principal at SHS, agreed with Heinemann.

“This was always going to be a stepping stone for him. There’s not much future in security here at Snohomish, because there’s no place to advance to.”

Brockman has been a part of hiring a new security officer. The procedure followed is similar to what would happen if another staff member left. Once Heinemann submitted his letter of resignation, the position was open for new applicants.

“We had quite a few people apply,” Brockman said. “We felt that Gavin did a pretty darn good job, so we knew what we were looking for."

As of today, the interviews for the position are finished, and a selection is being made. Brockman says, however, that they don’t intend to just pick someone and go for it.

“We want to get somebody new who is going to fit in here and fit into the culture. It’s just a matter of finding the right person.”
