Penny Project displays how deep in debt America is

Snohomish High School’s DECA Advanced Marketing class has been working on a Penny Project that focuses on the large deficit of the United States. On November 5, they presented it to the rest of the high school.

“The purpose of this is to demonstrate how much we owe and kind of what we spend our money on,” said Brenden Perry, a junior at SHS. “It gives us an idea of how much in debt we are.”

All together there were about 20,000 pennies used in the project, including around 16,000 pennies in the debt chart, almost 4,000 pennies in the budget chart and only seven pennies to represent the seven billion people living in the world. For the U.S. population the DECA students used one penny and shaded it in so that only a third of it showed to represent the population of the United States of America.

Afterwards, all of the pennies used in the presentation were donated to the Make a Wish Foundation, an organization that helps terminally ill children be able to have their one wish, whether it might be going to Disneyland or meeting some superstar, come true.

“Helping out with this project is really informative about what our country is spending money on,” said Jordan Saunders, a junior at SHS.

Saunders went on to talk about how the project “opens your eyes and shows you that you can start saving [now]”.
