Nick of Time Foundation offers free heart screenings at Snohomish

The Nick of Time Foundation will be performing free heart screenings at Snohomish High School on November 7, 2012.

The foundation is dedicated to Nicholas Varrenti. He was a sixteen year old football player when he died of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Since his death in 2004, the Nick of Time Foundation has been educating people on detecting heart conditions before they become fatal. It has focused its efforts on reducing the amount of youth who die from sudden cardiac arrest through early detection.

Mike Sanders, a junior of Snohomish High School, proposed the idea of bringing the free heart screenings to his school. He believes that every student who is able to should participate in the screenings. The foundation does a screening about once a month, traveling to schools around Washington.

“We’re pretty lucky to have them here,” Sanders said.

The heart screenings are open to all youth between the ages of 14 and 24. Stephen VerHoeven and Beth Porter have urged the students of SHS to partake in the screenings.

Each participant has to fill out a Heart Health Survey prior to the exam. If someone has a family history of a heart condition or there are any symptoms of one, then an echocardiogram will be performed. The results are reviewed by experienced cardiologists and sports physicians.
