Oscar the Truck Keeps Tradition Alive

SHS is full of many different types of traditions which the students and staff members look forward to keeping alive. But a couple of students spent this year bringing tradition back in a big way.

Since last fall two Seniors Nick Breske and Cody Shurtz took on the challenge to restore a 1928 Ford Model AA truck that was given the nickname “Oscar.” Their original idea was to build a motorcycle and at the end of the year donate it to the school for functions such as the Serpentine parade and other unique activities hosted by SHS. When Assistant Principal Gordy Brockman heard the boys plan he knew he had exactly what they were looking for, which was “Oscar” the truck.

From the start both of the boys knew that the truck was going to take a lot of work to restore since it had been packed away in storage for so long, however, both of these boys thought it was worth the time and effort to bring back a tradition that once took place at SHS. During the 1960s into the late 1980s Oscar used to lead multiple homecoming parades and served as a concession stand during football games.

Recently the boys finished rebuilding the engine and break system and now that they are done with the mechanical work they are going to begin restoring the original popcorn machine. “Rebuilding this truck has taken a lot of time and effort but when we installed the gas tank and we got to take it for a test drive in the student parking lot and it reached up to 25 mph I knew all of our hardwork was worth it,” expressed Senior, Nick Breske.

As the year quickly approaches the end the boys will be finishing up with the final touches on Oscar the truck.
