Track and Field competitors take their shot at the state competition

Six track and field student athletes from SHS will be competing in the Washington State 4A Track and Field meet beginning today.

Last weekend, Senior Leiran Cornish took first in the 400 meter finals.

Last year, Cornish placed eighth in the 400, but experts have her taking home the title this year.  However winning is not Cornish’s main focus. “It’s always nice to win but I run to keep healthy,” stated Cornish.

Joining Cornish in the state competitions is Senior Kevin Yates, who placed first in districts in long jump and second in high jump.  In addition, Senior Travis Pickett took second place in the discus and in the high jump, senior Gabe Reichenberger took third.

Junior Christian Linder snatched third in the 200 meter and Sophomore sprinter Madison Lichter got fourth in the 100 meter.

Several other Panthers came close to making the state trip including Senior Carolyn Gravelle, an alternate in shot put and discus. “I along with the rest of the coaches are extremely proud of them, they all did great,” stated Head Coach Tuck Gionet.
